TubeFuse Technologies Limited has developed a ground-breaking technology for joining tubulars without the need for thread connections. This innovative forge-welding technology allows tubulars to be joined safely and quickly on a rig in a way which guarantees gas tight sealing and provides an essentially flush joint.
The industry trend towards deeper, high pressure wells demands development and use of new technology to meet the increasingly severe downhole environments. A space-age challenge confronting the industry is the construction of long pressure tubular vessels which, in addition to sustaining high stresses due to tensile, burst and collapse loadings must be leak-proof at high gas pressures. The oil and gas industry has long been searching for a process of reliably joining tubulars, eliminating the weak point of thread connections.
Royal Dutch Shell recognised a particular need for such technology and for many years has been investing in a comprehensive research and development program designed with the aim of bringing a well construction revolution to the industry. A patented method of joining tubulars using Shielded Active Gas Forge Welding (SAG-FW) was the result.
In March of 2007, Royal Dutch Shell made the strategic step of putting their new technology companies into a fund (STV Fund 1), brought in external funding (Coller Capital and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority) and created a company – Kenda Capital, to manage the fund. The Fund also has proprietary access to oil and gas field operations and wells in order to test, prove and demonstrate combinations of new technologies.
